The  motto of this blog is summed up in the (far too tiny) quote up there in the header.  It comes from the Hole song “Doll Parts,” which is the sixth track on the kick-ass feminist grunge-punk-rock album Live Through This.  It’s an indisputable classic, it got me through high school, and therefore we do not trash Courtney Love on this site.  Still, one has to acknowledge how fucked-up the past fifteen or so years of her life have been in order to really appreciate these lyrics.  Also, one should read this.

All right, that’s all the analysis I’m providing— you can take it from here.

(I included this link so you can listen to the song; the video itself isn’t that interesting or impressive, so those who can’t watch it or listen to it would do fine just reading the lyrics below.  For those who are curious, however, a brief description of the video is included  at the bottom of the page.)

I am doll eyes, doll mouth, doll legs
I am doll arms, big veins, dog bait
Yeah, they really want you, they really want you, they really do
Yeah, they really want you, they really want you, and I do too

I want to be the girl with the most cake
I love him so much it just turns to hate
I fake it so real I am beyond fake
And someday you will ache like I ache

Someday you will ache like I ache
Someday you will ache like I ache
Someday you will ache like I ache
Someday you will ache like I ache

I am doll parts, bad skin, doll heart
Let’s dance for the night, for the rest of my life
Yeah they really want you, they really want you, they really do
Yeah they really want you, they really want you, but I do too

I want to be the girl with the most cake
He only loves those things because he loves to see them break
I fake it so real I am beyond fake
And someday you will ache like I ache

And someday you will ache like I ache
And someday you will ache like I ache
And someday you will ache like I ache
And someday you will ache like I ache
And someday you will ache like I ache
And someday you will ache like I ache
Someday you will ache like I ache

The video begins with a black and white scene of Courtney Love sitting on a bare bed in the middle of an empty and dilapidated-looking room.  She’s a thin white woman in her late twenties with messy blonde hair and smeared eye-makeup (if you didn’t know; generally I presume a basic knowledge of her on this blog).  She wears a plain white dress and strums an acoustic guitar.  Soon she’s joined by a distressed little boy of about seven who appears as if he could be her son. These scenes are intercut with color shots of Love playing an electric guitar with the rest of Hole in a brighter, but still run-down space.  Love still looks purposely a mess here (Maude bless her), but she’s wearing a fancier, red slip dress.  Later, the bedroom b&w scenes are interspersed with shots of her rolling around on dead grass in front of a tea set, and the color scenes of Hole are cut with shots of Love writhing in rose petals, because why not? She proceeds to throw things, though not at anyone in particular.  Finally we see her watching the little boy leave with his head hanging down.
